SAGE Calendar of Events
August 2010
Now that we’re settling in to our new Center, we’re realizing just how nice it is to have our own home…a place of PRIDE for our entire community. Many thanks to all of you who have contributed toward the realization of the new Center and the many new possibilities it represents. SAGE of the Rockies is making full use of the new space, with a great variety of fun, informative and meaningful events. Come and join in the fun, and celebrate with us as we inaugurate the next chapter of LGBT life in Denver.
Telling Your Story Project
Mondays – 1:30 – 3:00 PM
The Center – Victory Room
Those who have been participating in the Telling Your Story Project met to discuss how to proceed, now that our student intern is no longer with us to lead the group. Their enthusiasm to continue on their own led to the decision to keep the time on Mondays, 1:30 – 3:00 PM, at The Center. The sharing of life stories is such a rich and rewarding undertaking. Memories are stimulated, connections are made, and meaning is given to how we got where we are, both individually and as a community. Whether you choose to write or tell your stories aloud, your own history is worth sharing. If you want to be part of this wonderful and enriching experience, feel free to join in.
Tuesday Morning Coffee (Note time change)
Weekly
10:00 – 11:30 AM
The Center – SAGE of the Rockies space (garden level)
Join old friends and make new ones at our weekly drop-in for morning coffee and good conversation. We provide the coffee. The conversation is free and relaxed. All ages welcome.
Caregiver Support Group
Aug. 4 and Aug. 18 (First and third Wednesdays – ongoing)
1:30 – 3:00 PM
The Center – Victory Room
Providing support and care for a friend or loved one can be a very challenging task, especially over the long haul. Whether it is a partner, a friend, or a parent, in order to be effective as a caregiver, it is essential to take care of oneself along the way. A very helpful way to do that is to find others who understand the caregiver’s role, and who can offer emotional and practical solutions, as well as help identify other resources from our community. This support group is open to LGBT caregivers of any age, does not require a membership commitment, and is here as often as you need it. Feel free to call Ken if you’d like additional information
Yoga
Yoga is on hold temporarily due to scheduling conflicts. Stay tuned for more details when we get the program up and running again.
AARP Safe Driving Course
Aug. 11-12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Center --Stonewall Room
Want to save some money on your car insurance? Colorado state low requires auto insurance companies to discount premiums for older drivers (50+) who complete the AARP safe driving course. The Center will be host to the eight-hour course over two days. The cost is $12 for AARP members, and $14 for non-members. Reservations are required as space will fill up quickly
Medications and Aging – Medical Marijuana
Friday – Aug. 27
1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
The Center – Stonewall Room
You’ve no doubt been hearing a lot of controversy about the burgeoning medical marijuana dispensaries in the Denver area. Regardless of the political issues, folks have many questions about the effectiveness and uses of marijuana for various physical and emotional disorders. Very little attention has been paid to how marijuana might be helpful or harmful to older people, as well as how and when to consider its use in combination with other medications. Our certified geriatric pharmacist, Tom Simpleman, will give us an expert view on the subject and will answer questions you may have. Someone will surely ask…”Does Medicare Part D cover medical marijuana?” Don’t miss this one.
King Tut Exhibit
Wednesday - September 1st
2:00 – 4:00 P.M.
Denver Art Museum
Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs is a new exhibition that made its North American debut in Atlanta in 2009, and is making its only Rocky Mountain west stop at the Denver Art Museum. We will join with members of Prime Timers for their weekly lunch at Charlies at 11:30–1:00 on Wednesday, September 1st, and then make our way to the Denver Art Museum for a group tour. We have 10 tickets (@ $12.50 each) and will require advance registration by letting Ken know you plan to attend. This will be a very interesting outing.
The exhibition features more than 50 objects from King Tut’s tomb, including the golden sandals that adorned the mummy’s feet and a beautifully adorned canopic jar that held the pharaoh’s internal organs. Plus, see the largest image of King Tut ever unearthed, a 10-foot statue found at the remains of a funerary temple. In addition, 80 ancient artifacts highlight many of the most significant rulers of ancient Egypt—from Khafre, builder of the Great Sphinx and one of the pyramids at Giza, to Hatshepsut, the queen who became king.
