Legal/Advocacy

The Center’s Legal & Advocacy Program, formerly known as The Center's Legal Initiatives Project (CLIP), is the legal outreach program of The Center.

Founded in 1992 to oppose the anti-gay Colorado constitutional Amendment 2, the Legal & Advocacy program is the only legal project in Colorado dedicated solely to the equality and dignity of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and those with HIV. We work to ensure that LGBT Coloradans' civil rights are protected, either through legislation or legal advice and referrals.

In recent years, The Center's Legal and Advocacy Program has worked to advance LGBT rights in Colorado by lobbying the legislature for laws that protect and enhance the lives of LGBT Coloradans. In 2009, the Colorado legislature passed a Designated Beneficiaries law that allows LGBT people to make their partner the beneficiary of insurance, inheritance, hospital visitations and other important matters. That was one of five laws passed in recent years that protect LGBT Coloradans. Please click here to learn more about these important laws.

The Center has actively partnered with the Anti-Defamation League, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Colorado Progressive Coalition, the Colorado Anti-Violence Program, the Gill Action Fund and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to fight discrimination against the LGBT community.

The Legal and Advocacy program also provides internships for law school students from the University of Denver and the University of Colorado who are looking to gain experience with LGBT issues.

The Center will host its annual legal fundraiser, Jokers, Jewels and Justice, on March 11 at the Curtis Hotel in downtown Denver. The fun night of casino gaming will include a DJ, open bar and a silent auction with fabulous items such as an African safari and a Coors suite to a Rockies game.
